Top Gear helps BBC iPlayer break records
BBC iPlayer recorded nearly 300 million total views on TV and radio broadcasts during the month. Top Gear was the most popular program – 2.645 million viewers aired the second episode of the ongoing series, which has since been discontinued due to the sacking of host Jeremy Clarkson.
EastEnders was also popular due to its 30th anniversary live-action episode. The soap opera occupied half of the top 20 while The Voice, The Great Comic Relief Bake Off and Waterloo Road also made the list. The original dramas Wolf Hall, The Casual Vacancy, and Silent Witness also drew around 1 million downloads for each episode.
Mobile devices continue to account for a huge chunk of on-demand traffic – more than half of show requests came from smartphones and tablets in February, the highest level ever seen on the service.
The numbers also underline the importance of Top Gear to the BBC. Only two episodes of the hit show aired in March, so it’s likely that iPlayer viewership numbers could drop next month.
However, BBC iPlayer had a record few months after strong Christmas audience figures and the highest ever in January, with 343 million requests.
