Three has been a major player in the UK mobile phone market since its launch in 2003. Owned by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa, Three focuses on big data plans and even offers unlimited SIM deals, as well as features that give its users use some applications without data.

Three has a range of handsets available from popular manufacturers including Apple, Google, Huawei and Samsung, and is the only supplier in the UK to stock Razer phones. But here we’re focusing on the SIM deals, so let’s take a look at exactly what Three has to offer in that regard.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that SIM offerings are all pretty much the same regardless of the provider, but every network has something unique to offer and Three is no different, with a range of features that make it so. SIM card only processes much more than the standard data, texts and minutes.

Go binge

Go Binge is included with most of Three’s SIM offerings and lets you stream movies, TV shows, and music from Netflix, Apple Music, Deezer, Lifetime, SoundCloud, and TV Player, and use Snapchat. , as many as you want without using any of your data allowance.

Go wander

All mobile operators like to talk about free roaming in the EU, but on some plans Three will let you use your allowance in 71 destinations. We’ll get to that in more detail in the roaming section below.

Wuntu app

wuntu is a three-customer offers and rewards app available through the App Store or Google Play. Each week you receive a new set of offers from Deliveroo, Hotel Chocolat, Costa, Domino’s, Majestic Wine and Rakuten TV.

Unlimited SIM data

Three is one of the few providers that offers an unlimited data SIM card. It is available on a sliding monthly contract or on a 12 month contract.

Personal hotspot

Three allows its customers to use part of their data allowance as a personal hotspot, so you can connect with other devices even when there is no wifi.

Unlimited SMS

All of Three’s SIM plans come with unlimited texting. This is true for a number of providers, but it’s good to know that when you’re not using WhatsApp or Messenger, you don’t have to worry about how many messages you send.

Control your spending

Three allows you to block calls and texts to numbers that are not allowed, such as 0845 and 118 numbers.

Is Three a good network?

Three is one of the four UK mobile networks, the others being EE, Vodafone and O2. All other UK mobile service providers are in fact MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) which are grafted onto one of these four. Three has always said their network was built for the internet and currently handles 36% of UK mobile data traffic, with Three’s customers using 3.5 times more data than the average Briton, according to Three.

Three’s 4G network covers 98.3% of the UK population and supports 4G Super-Voice, which gives you better indoor signal and clearer voice calls over 4G. In the last analysis published by OpenSignal, Three’s 4G network achieved an uptime score of 76%, meaning OpenSignal testers could get a 4G signal just over three-quarters of the time.

Data and calling features

More and more, mobile service providers are including additional data and calling features in their offerings to make your phone easier to use, and therefore life, a bit more. We’ve rounded up a few of the more popular ones, and now let’s take a look at whether Three offers them or not, and Three’s data speed.

  • 4G data speed – Openignal Analysis shows that Three’s 4G network offers average download speeds of 18 Mbps. It’s a bit behind Vodafone and EE but ahead of O2, for comparison. Three’s average 3G download speed, at 8 Mbps, was the fastest in OpenSignal’s analysis.
  • Data rollover – Three doesn’t offer any sort of data transfer scheme, but its plans tend to be quite data heavy, and there’s the Go Binge feature which represents some popular data-hungry apps.
  • Sharing the line – Three wants to say that you can use your data to create a personal hotspot and connect with another device (a process known as tethering). And there’s no limit for that – you can use your entire data allowance this way if you want.
  • Wi-Fi calling – Three is one of a growing number of providers offering wifi calling, a technology that allows you to make calls and send text messages over wifi when you don’t have access to a mobile network (3G or 4G).
  • Data donation – Three doesn’t have a data donation program in place, but you can use tethering to help your friends and family get online using your data allowance.
  • Data Limits – Three lets you control your monthly spending by blocking your phone from calling certain numbers, but the provider doesn’t put any kind of data cap in place.

Three-way roaming

All UK mobile service providers must allow you to use your data allowance across the EU without charging you additional roaming charges. It is the law, or at least as long as the UK is still a member of the EU. Some providers include more than EU states in their list of roaming destinations.

Three’s Essential plans come with Go Roam in Europe, which means you can use your phone like at home in 49 European destinations. Advanced plans (more expensive, more data intensive) come with Roam Around the World, which brings the total number of destinations in which you can use your plan at no additional cost to 71.

Three’s Go Roam destinations are Aaland Islands, Australia, Austria, Azores, Balearic Islands, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France (including Corsica, Mayotte and Réunion), French Guyana, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece (including Crete and Rhodes), Guadeloupe, Guatemala , Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Isle of Man, Israel, Italy (including Sardinia and Sicily), Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Madeira, Malta, Marie-Galante, Martinique, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland , United States (including Florida Keys), Uruguay, United States Virgin Islands, Vatican City and Vietnam.

It’s available for Three customers with a paid monthly contract, including SIM-only contracts, and you can purchase it from Three’s website. You will also receive an SMS from Three with a link to purchase the Data Passport when you arrive in an eligible country.
