Socialist MPs and peers call on government to impose sanctions on Israel
SOCIALIST MPs and peers call on the UK government to impose sanctions on Israel for its repeated violations of international law.
Ministers are under increasing pressure to hold Israel to account after the death toll in Gaza surpassed 180 today, including at least 52 children and 31 women, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
An open letter from 24 members of the socialist campaign group, including Diane Abbott, Apsana Begum, Bell Ribeiro Addy, Dawn Butler and Richard Burgon, warns that injustice against Palestinians is escalating.
“A lasting peace for both Palestinians and Israelis can only be ensured through a just solution that addresses the injustices of Israel’s illegal occupation: its colonial settlements, its denial of the right of return for Palestinian refugees, its violations of human rights and international law and its siege of Gaza.
“As the former colonial power who issued the Balfour Declaration and who was then responsible for the mandate leading to the Nakba [the Palestinian exodus] of 1948, Britain has a special responsibility to do everything possible to ensure a just peace.
The letter, also signed by Labor peers Christine Blower, John Hendy and Shami Chakrabarti, calls on ministers to impose sanctions and impose an arms embargo on Israel.
He also calls on ministers to show their full support for the opening by the International Criminal Court of an investigation into alleged war crimes in the occupied territories and to recognize the State of Palestine.
At the national level, a petition calling on the government to embargo trade with Israel, in particular arms, was signed by more than 250,000 people this afternoon. This means that the issue will be debated in Parliament.
