Sacha Baron Cohen: From Dicky Cheney to Rudy Giuliani, 5 biggest victims of the English actor-comedian
English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen celebrates its 50th anniversary today. Called variously the “greatest prankster of our time” and “the most inventive figure in comedy today”, he has a veritable list of those he tricked into revealing their true selves, their unsavory beliefs and their real prejudices.
Cohen does this by adopting different disguises, accents, and brand-new characters like Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, to trick the victim into believing the person she’s talking to is someone she can trust. He said he used his brand of comedy to get people to “reveal their real selves”.
Using his unique methods, he has duped many public figures. Here are his five biggest victims:
The Vice President of the United States under George Bush, Dick Cheney, often referred to as the architect of the war on terror and the violence that resulted from it, encountered an extremely transformed Sacha in the non-fiction political satirical series of Showtime Who Is America ?. Ash was disguised as a scarred former IDF officer named Erran Morad, who claimed to have killed scores of people. “Erran” praised Cheney for his endorsement of torture (Cheney had endorsed “improved interrogation techniques” during his tenure). He then asked Cheney for an autograph on his waterboarding kit, the same one he had used to waterboard his wife because he thought she had cheated on him. Cheney obliged.
Georgian politician Jason Spencer
Ash used the character of Erran Morad again with Republican Georgia State Representative Jason Spencer. Here, the results were so embarrassing that ridicule prompted Spencer to quit. Sacha later marveled that he had stayed on for a while, even after the episode came out. “Erran” had told Spencer that pulling down his pants and shouting racist slurs would deter ISIS from attacking him. “If you want to win, you show a little skin,” said “Erran”. That’s exactly what he did – on TV.
In Borat Subsquent Moviefilm, Sacha asked Bulgarian actor character Maria Bakalova and her on-screen daughter Tutar to interview Rudy Giuliani, former New York mayor and Trump lawyer. After the interview, Tutar and Giuliani went to the latter’s hotel room with wine in hand. It looks like they’re going to have sex and Giuliani puts his hands in his pants. Giuliani said he was just pulling up his shirt.
A whole crowd of Donald Trump fans
In Borat’s sequel, titled Borat After Moviefilm, Sacha was disguised as a right wing nutcase. At an anti-containment rally, he took the stage and began singing an extremely funny (and surprisingly catchy) song, the lyrics of which were meant to appeal to the racists, xenophobes and anti-scientists among Trump fans. The lyrics read, “Obama was a traitor, America hates her” and later “Obama, what are we going to do, inject him with the Wuhan flu.” Journalists, what are we going to do, chop them up like the Saudis are doing ”. Crazy, many of the crowd started to sing.
Octogenarian Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders was the only one in Who is America? who came out with his reputation (and his wit) intact. Ash was disguised as Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr, a stupid, far-right conspiracy theorist (perhaps the same one Palin had met) who tried to get Sanders into a crazy mathematical argument as the latter tried (and failed) ) to make sense of the conversation. Bernie remained polite even though he realized he was talking to an idiot.
