Protesters gathered outside the Ninth Circuit prosecutor’s office on Monday afternoon to seek justice in the case of a man who died at Al Cannon Detention Center in January. to force him out of his cell so he could attend a bail hearing. The group demanded that charges be laid for Sutherland’s death, shouting “Justice for Jamal”. Another protest that started after 4 p.m. in Marion Square turned into a march through Charleston. “We demand that the officers implicated in the murder of Jamal Sutherland be fired, arrested and charged,” Lowcountry Action Committee spokesperson Joshua Parks said. “We also demand an independent, not internal investigation and after action review of the facilities, the agencies involved in the Jamal Sutherland case.” A group called the Justice for All Coalition also wants law enforcement agencies to reallocate money to create a department specifically designed to address mental health issues. They also want the creation of an oversight board made up of non-police officers who can review data and discipline and firefighters on violations. Coalition members say they will continue to push for change until that their requests be met, adding that they will not stop doing. âYou’ll see us on the streets, and it won’t be a quiet tourist season if those demands aren’t met,â Parks said. âWe know they only respond when their pockets are touched.â Ninth Circuit prosecutor Scarlett Wilson has not ruled out the possibility of criminal prosecution, but said last week she was awaiting further information in the investigation before making the decision. Sutherland had been arrested the night before his death after North Charleston Police responded to a 911 call at a mental health facility where a fight was reported. Sutherland was charged with third degree assault and beating and injuries. Last week, North Charleston Police released body camera video showing Sutherland’s arrest at the mental health center and transfer to Al Cannon Detention Center. Late Thursday evening, the Charleston County Sheriff, Kristin Graziano, posted body camera footage of detention officers showing the moments leading up to Sutherland’s death. Graziano said the two MPs were working in an administrative capacity.
