LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The Rise of Socialism | Letters

Americans’ views on socialism have evolved over the past 60 years.
As the larger generation struggled to stem Hitler’s ravages during WWII, they returned home after a glorious victory, hating socialism as well as tyranny. However, over the years, many millennials have taken an interest in this political philosophy. They were very drawn to Bernie Sanders in 2016 as well as the 2020 presidential campaign.
Young people suffered from the 2008 budget crisis, a raging pandemic and poor job prospects. Not to mention expensive housing, which has led many college graduates to stay with their parents.
There has been a myth about this philosophy. US Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky says the supporters of socialism are the advocates of tyranny. However, the goals of today’s future socialists are equal rights for workers. For example, they want workers to sit on boards of directors with well-paid executives. They also want workers to bargain collectively with managers in order to have access to better working conditions.
In addition, the Socialists want paid family leave, a higher minimum wage with elements of child care and health.
