Letter to the editor: Miller-Meeks uses fear tactics to raise funds
By Trish Nelson, Iowa City
In a fundraising letter, Second District Republican Marianette Miller-Meeks has repeatedly called Democrats “socialists.” Miller-Meeks is either very confused or giving his constituents a boost.
Historically, Republicans have used the scary word “socialism”, referring to programs that benefit people, dating back to the days of Jim Crow. They said laws that helped black people vote would cost taxpayers money because black people would then vote for their own economic interests and called it “wealth transfer” and “socialism.” They also said it about Medicare, Social Security, unemployment compensation programs and the Affordable Care Act, calling ACA “socialized medicine” and “government sponsored. health care”.
In the modern age, Republicans are using discussion groups and professional propagandists to come up with the right degrading phrase to trick people into believing that the programs that will benefit them are scary and will ruin the country.
Other examples of publicly funded programs and institutions that benefit people include the U.S. Post Office, public schools, the GI Bill, our military, our roads and bridges, and yes, our elected officials. government, including Mrs. Miller-Meeks, whose salary is paid by our taxes. Mrs Miller-Meeks, do you think you are the beneficiary of a “socialist” system?
We all undoubtedly benefit from one or more people-centered programs that have been put in place throughout our history. We need these programs to improve our lives.
Miller-Meeks uses creepy tactics to raise funds and spread misinformation. This is unacceptable to a representative from the Iowa Second District.
