Bernie Sanders: India Walton’s victory is “an important step forward for the workers of Buffalo”
BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) – India Walton’s apparent victory over incumbent Byron Brown in the Buffalo Mayor’s Primary this week has been celebrated in progressive circles across the country – and the movement’s godfather has taken note .
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted Friday that he called Walton to congratulate her on her victory.
“His victory in the mayor’s primary is an important step forward for workers in Buffalo and shows the political power of a program that puts people first,” said Sanders. tweeted to its 15.2 million followers.
Walton proudly considers herself a democratic socialist and is on track to become the first socialist mayor of a major American city since 1960. She will be the only candidate for the ballot in November, although some groups, such as the Police Union, are encouraging Brown present himself as a candidate in writing.
Walton addressed his “democratic socialist tendencies” Tuesday evening after his victory in the primaries.
“When we think of socialism, you know, we totally agree with socialism for the rich,” Walton said. “We will bail out Wall Street and the banks and give one of the richest people in the world a billion dollars in tax incentives to build an empty Tesla factory in South Buffalo, and when it comes to providing the resources.” that working families need to thrive. , socialism gets scary at this point. So I am very proud to be a democratic socialist. I am proud to have the support of Buffalo DSA and National DSA (Socialist Democrats of America).
“I got a call from Congresswoman AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a national leader of the left-wing movement) tonight and I’m just thrilled to be a part of this movement that is ushering in progressive politics in Buffalo. Being the third poorest mid-sized city in this country, we should think about how we will begin to eradicate concentrated poverty and disadvantage, and democratic socialist tendencies are a big step in getting us there.
