It’s official. I’m going to hell of the cursed socialists, Sweden. My daughter, son-in-law and grandson live there and I’m worried about their freedom. I have to make sure they don’t suffer from too much oppression.

My daughter married a Swede and has been living in Sweden for a little over two years. It’s horrible. Just a year and two months after arriving in Sweden, my grandson was born. Under oppressive Swedish law my daughter and son-in-law had 18 months parental leave between them. It’s heartbreaking to see a country forcing so many parental ties on a young couple and their newborn baby. I’m sure they’re just devastated that they’re not in the US where they could have the freedom to return home after motherhood and adjust to having a new child while preparing to return to work during the week. next.

And it’s getting worse and worse. Swedes are obliged to take at least 41 days of vacation per year. It’s a crushing six week downtime. In an inconceivable violation of her freedom, my daughter learned last spring that she needed to take more time off. To keep the bossy thugs happy, they take two weeks to travel through Croatia. I am sure they will be unhappy.

And as if to add insult to injury, they get paid extra when traveling because Sweden knows families spend more when they are on vacation. I choke on myself just thinking about the freedom they’ve lost.

They also suffer from all kinds of other oppressive socialist policies. They have free health care, free childcare when their parental leave ends, and then, in a final slap in the face of parenthood, they have free college when their child enters adulthood. Crushed under the thumb of a big government throughout their lives, they work less, pay more taxes and yet have a higher disposable income. I am on the Mercatus Institute would tell you how much freedom they lost.

The nanny state there is so stifling that they are routinely seen as the one of the happiest countries in the world. Their median income is higher than the United States. They to live longer and their infant mortality rate is less than half of what it is in the land of the free. More, they have practically no poverty. Socialism is brutal.

But you know what’s even more infuriating? The corporate world doesn’t even care. No boycotts, no nothing. Sweden is regularly named one of the best countries for doing business in the world. Not only that, Stockholm is just behind Silicon Valley in terms of per capita investment. Their tech and startup scene is booming despite oppressive and freedom-crushing socialism. I bet that Tax Foundation Business Highlight Index would rate them terribly.

Yes, I am mentally preparing to lose my freedom for a week. I just have to make sure that all the oppression my daughter and her family face is not excessive. Wish me good luck.
