Dramatis Personae

These are by no means all the characters; I don't have enough server space to do that.

Theamh ni hUlnach na Craoibh

Theamh is, as she puts it, "the puce sheep of the family." Born into a wealthy family in the City's fashionable quarter, Theamh left home at sixteen to enter the scoil and become a shriia specializing in possessions and related phenomena. Outside the Order, she's famous as the woman who brought Lythril to justice, cleansed the Ubh, and discovered the secret of the long slow burning; inside the Order, she's famous as a talented but undisciplined troublemaker with some serious authority issues. She lives with her apprentice in a house in the forest near the rural farming community to which she ministers.

Aine ni hEmer na Ruadh

Theamh's apprentice. At nineteen, Aine has reached the apprentice stage several years ahead of almost everyone else in the scoil's history. Aine comes from a poor fishing family in coastal Jipran and is the third of seven children; despite her formidable intelligence and determination, she is intimidated by just about everyone and everything in the City. She also has kind of a problem with spirits. However, since she intends to go into possessions, she'll be needing to work through that.

Lythril

Lythril's wants are really very simple: she wants to rule the universe, and she wants to live forever. Is that so much to ask? Originally from Kengda, a province known for not much besides bogs, swamps, and marshland, Lythril soon got tired of that and went to the City, entering the scoil at around the same time as Ulnach. Since she was kicked out of scoil, Lythril has become the Dark One's most successful and notorious minion, and for the past thirty years has been making life hell for everyone she can reach, including and especially Theamh.

Mna ni Dhrialan na Lough

All Theamh really knows about Mna is that she's nineteen, homeless, and the mother of twins, one of whom has been taken. Mna's distinguishing personality characteristics are determination, curiosity, and a refusal to take fnaa off anyone, especially people who think that because she's a poor unjoined mother they have the right to run her life.

Taric

Clearly the strong silent type, Taric's got reasons for the silence, even if the strength is something that just comes naturally. He lives on a remote farm outside the village of Felim Cloch and keeps very much to himself until a pair of confused rappari get him mixed up with Mna, Theamh and the twins. Taric may have the gift of seeing into the future; but if he does, he's not telling.

NightQueen

NightQueen is a fifteen-year-old Cretid runaway who makes the mistake of trying to mug Theamh and Aine. Circumstances force them upon each other, which is initially a problem since NightQueen is a pain in the gleacha and has a close personal relationship with Satan. But nothing's ever as simple as it looks; and NightQueen's familiarity with evil is not something she was exactly free to choose.

Lara

Born with a male body, Lara is now in the process of "making the T," or as Theamh and Aine understand it, undergoing ransa. Lara, being an openhearted and generous woman who likes to help the forlorn as much as she likes to party, takes Theamh and Aine under her wing and introduces them to the many delights of life in Cretid City. When not chaperoning stranded Ideirens, Lara works as a sales representative for Natural Woman cosmetics; her main hobbies are tall, dark and handsome men, and getting in Family Forever's face as often as possible.

Ulnach

At sixteen, Theamh's mother Ulnach left the bogs of her native Kengda to come to scoil to become a shriia. Instead of finishing scoil, Ulnach dropped out to get married. Her husband Flahn turned out to be a very successful businessman, and Ulnach is now the undisputed queen of the City's most influential and exclusive social circle. Theamh was upset but not surprised to find that Ulnach wasn't happy about her only daughter becoming a shriia; after all, their relationship had always been rocky. But Ulnach's reasons for discouraging Theamh from a career in magic may be much deeper and darker than Theamh imagines.
